Itinerary Feb 1-10, 2019
Day one. Flight into Santo Domingo and settle into the hotel
Day two. Visit the colonial zone of Santo Domingo where we
will have a guided tour of the Columbus family house which
was built during the time of Columbus's second voyage to the
new world. Next we will visit the first school, the first hospital,
and the first fort in the Americas. In the afternoon we will
visit Tres Ojos, three beautiful underground pools near the center
of the city, similar to the cenotes of the Yucatan. Overnight in
Santo Domingo
Day three. We will leave Santo Domingo, traveling east to the Boca Chica area. We will visit one of the many Major League Baseball academies in the area. Many young Latin players make there way to
the major leagues through one of these camps. Baseball is a huge part
of the Dominican culture. Lunch at a nearby restaurant. A couple of hours beach time. Leave in the afternoon, heading north to Samana for the night.
Day four. Guided whale watching tour through the bay. This is a great way to see humpback whales with their babies in this protected bay. Every year during January and February the whales come to this area to have their young. Excellent guides explain the migration and birthing habits of these huge gentle creatures. Upon our return we will stop off
at a nearby island for some lunch , beach time, and snorkeling. This
is a really nice day to relax and enjoy one of nature's wonders.
Overnight in Samana.
Day five. We will take a short drive around the peninsula to Rincon Beach where we will enjoy the scenery of this tropical area. Playa Rincon is touted as the most beautiful beach in the Dominican
Republic. We will have plenty of time to enjoy a relaxing day. Return
to the hotel in the afternoon. Optional activities in there area in Samana are hiking, ziplining, swimming, fishing.
Day six. Today we head to the town of Puerto Plata. We will be here
for the next 3 nights where we will use this area as a base and also there will be a variety of optional activities to choose from.
Day Seven. Today we will take a short drive to a dock for a day trip to Paradise Island. The catamaran makes stops for snorkeling, swimming, and enjoying the sun and scenery. Lunch is included on the tour. In the late afternoon we will take a tram ride up the mountain overlooking the city. A statue of Christ is on the top of the mountain overlooking the town of Puerto Plata (Silver Port) with spectacular view of the city.
Much of the Spanish silver came from this area. Great place for
photos. Back to the hotel for the evening.
Day eight. For the thrill seekers we will have an optional trip to
27 Water Falls. Hike up a hill and work you way down 27 water falls
with pools and natural slides of pristine clear water. A must do if you
are adventurous. If you don't want to jump from cliffs into the pools
or take the slides you can take the short trails around the ledges and
just get into the pools. It is a beautiful place unlike any other that
we've seen. Other options include city tour of the old part of Puerto
Plata and Ocean world (similar to Sea world) or stay at the hotel and relax.
Day nine. Another free day to relax and explore this beautiful area of the Caribbean.
